Fenway Bark - 2012 In Review

On behalf of the Fenway Bark team, the boys, and Jim, I want to thank you so much for a stellar second year for Fenway Bark!

Some milestones that are due, in no small amount to your support of our business include:

- The number of customers and dogs more than doubled in our second year!  Many of our new customers came from your recommendations.  Thank you!  We are humbled by your kind words.  Please remember we reward recommendations with free daycare and other perks.

- Through Great Dog Rescue of New England and Last Hope K9 Rescue, Fenway Bark has helped 58 rescue dogs find their forever homes!

- Through the generous contributions of the Fenway Bark clients, Angell Memorial Staff, and Pawsitive Dog clients we were able to collect a truckload of pet food and supply donations to send to the hurricane ravaged areas of New York touching the hearts and paws of our neighbors in the Tri-State area.  Thank you!

- Fenway Bark was named Best of Boston 2012 by Boston Magazine

- Fenway Bark was named one of the top 10 small businesses in the United States by American Express in the Big Break contest.  And although we didn't win the National contest, we felt like we won a million dollars with the support we received from our clients and the community!

We would also like to celebrate something equally important, our customers willingness to get a bit goofy with us because, quite frankly, there isn't enough plain goofiness in this world anymore so we create it when we can and enjoy when you laugh along with us.

- Baby New Year!

- K9 Mardi Gras!

- Fenway Bark was able to crown its first Prom King and Queen and Junior Prom King and Queen!

- We had our first Easter Egg Hunt where our guests sniffed out treats in eggs throughout the facility.

 - We had Yoghund Frozen Yogurt/K9 ice cream socials!

 - We have over 4000 genuine Facebook followers and were able to reach about 1 million people weekly with a mix of news, pictures, celebrations of the wonderful relationship people have with their dogs,
 goofiness and contests!

We were able to achieve important milestones through dedication to doing an exceptional job for our clients, setting the bar high, and avoiding pervasive industry practices of slamming the competition with fake Yelp reviews, etc.

Our future includes expanding our daycare services to meet the growing demand and re-evaluating the needs of our customers when it comes to retail product and the carrying cost of inventory and such.  We are looking at better solutions to meet your diverse food needs and our business profitability needs.

Our future also includes expanding our pick up and drop off services, expanding our offering of adjunct therapy services, and keeping a dialogue open with our customers to make sure that we are hearing what you need and anticipating your future needs.  To that end, we invite you to provide us with feedback on a short Survey Monkey questionnaire.

We are grateful for your support of our business, particularly during challenging economic times, and it is through your support that we were able to grow over 250% year over year.  We will only be able to continue healthy growth through listening to you and delivering on the promise of exceptional pet care for our exceptional clients and their family dog(s) and earning your recommendation every day.

Thank you again.

Warm Regards,

Jane

PS - We miss you Sofie, Jack, Tina and Muffy.  You helped our hearts grow while you were with us.

Update: Dog Poisonings in Southie

Early last week we posted information on Facebook and emails about alleged dog poisonings in Southie.

It appears that the dog poisonings may have, in fact, been due to natural causes and that poison that was allegedly found in Farragut Park may be due to placed rat traps near the harbor.  The police are analyzing one sample of alleged poison and the results have not been reported yet.

And although it appears that this time the alleged poisonings may not be the case, it is important for your dog to learn to "drop it" and "leave it" in the event your dog picks up something that may be dangerous.

In the course of Fenway Bark being open for two years clients have reported their dogs eating everything from socks to baby toys to marijuana.

Teaching your dog to drop it or leave it may save your dog's life and avoid needless surgery.

PS - Please be careful at Thanksgiving that your dog doesn't eat dangerous turkey bones, chocolate, grapes, garlic, onions, and more.  For a short presentation on foods that are dangerous for your pooch, click here.

Winter is around the corner. . .

Winter is around the corner so you are probably cleaning up leaves, putting in storm windows, checking out the new boots at Nordstroms, and putting a fresh antifreeze in your car.  All those are great steps to keeping YOU safe and comfortable as winter approaches but what about your buddy?

Yes, you need to winterize your pets, too!

Fenway Bark is offering its clients a winter care package to keep their paws healthy during a cold New England winter.  Dog are subject to snow and ice getting packed in their paws, cracking of their delicate paw pads, and street/sidewalk salt being caught in their paws where they are likely to lick it out if not wiped off after a winter stroll.

For $150 for the winter, Fenway Bark will maintain your pet's paws weekly, keeping the nails trimmed, fur trimmed between the pads, cleaned of any harsh elements and moisturized to keep the pads healthy.

If you would like to sign up for the service, please ask the concierge to sign your dog up for a Pawdicure package!  Or email the concierge to sign up your dog and request we charge the service to your card on file.

Holiday Boarding - Plan Early

Thanksgiving is only a little less than 7 weeks away and well planned puppy parents are already getting their Thanksgiving and Christmas boarding reservations at Fenway Bark in place for the holidays.  If you haven't made your reservations, we encourage you to do so while all room size options are available to you.

Giving Back

Giving back to the community is very important to the Fenway Bark team.  To that end, we are fostering adoptable dogs on most days and providing them with the socialization and affection they need before going to their forever homes.

To date, Fenway Bark has placed dozens of rescue dogs, almost 50 in one year, if you consider the dogs adopted last weekend at the Last Hope K9 adoption event.

It is our pleasure to give back and hope that you will join us in helping to save dogs, one at a time.

If you can't foster or adopt, please consider donating good condition leashes, collars, and other supplies to the rescues who give so much to helping the dogs find new homes.

See below for some of the adoptable dogs at Fenway Bark this week.

New Training Classes at Fenway Bark!

Life is complicated, right?  Between quarterly meetings, client entertainment, visiting leaf peepers and the challenges of day to day living, it is pretty stinkin' hard to commit to a 8 week training program for the pupster in your life.  Over the past year we have listened to countless numbers of you say that you want to enroll your dog in training but can't commit to a program that spans over months, many times crossing through holidays.

We heard you and responded by pulling together what we feel are outstanding 3 week programs that allow you to work on particular behaviors and training needs in focused core clinics.

Our October clinics including building leash walking skills, reliable recall, and for fun, some Howl-0-ween tricks!

To see the three clinics starting on October 6, please click here!

If there are clinics you would like to see us offer in the future, please let us know at info@fenwaybarkonline.com.

It is Hot Outside - Recognizing Heat Stroke in Dogs

As we have all noticed in New England, we are in the throws of the hottest days of summer.  This is the time of year that pets are at risk for dehydration and heat stroke.  Take time to know the signs and take precautions.

Be careful to source your dog's water carefully.  Giardia and other nasty parasites may dwell in standing water and consumption can lead to illness.

Enjoy a safe and happy summer with your pet!

Boston A List

The contest happens every year, the Boston A list, and we worked really hard and bugged you incessantly to vote for us last year, our first year, and in the wee hours of the contest, before the winner would be determined, a competitor stacked the vote.

We saw what happened, realized how much we bugged you about it, and in the spirit of karma, we were then bothered for a long time by the people who run the contest to buy useless "awards" that showed your comments, like plaques, mugs, etc.  It was very reminiscent of the "1000 Most Influential People" of bygone days when the goal was to sell the book to the nominee which later became a doorstop.

So this year we decided not to bug you much about it because we know you have better things to do with your time and we aren't interested in useless plaques as a trade off for your time.

Sadly, people do use this tool to determine which daycare or boarding facility to try and if you feel it is worth your time to share your sentiments with others to help us build our business, please vote.  However, we would much rather have your endorsement to someone you know that may need our services.  Your kind words to others have helped us build our business and more importantly, helped others find excellent solutions to their pet care needs.

We always appreciate your kind words on Google Reviews and Yelp, as well.

Thanks for your support!

Throw A Dog a Bone - Please vote today

We need your help with your vote.

Taking 10 seconds to vote could mean a $250,000 grant for us.  We are not quite at the half way mark of votes we need to qualify with only days left.  Its super simple to do, doesn't cost you a thing, and it is a really good opportunity for us.

Here is what you need to do:

1) Go to: www.missionsmallbusiness.com
2)  Register through Facebook or Twitter
3)  Search for "Fenway Bark"
4)  Vote for us

That's it.  Really.

Small business isn't easy, that's for sure.  A $250,000 grant will go a long way in small business.

Thank you for your small devotion of time, your vote, and your confidence in us.

Jane

Traffic Patterns Through July 9

The Boston Seaport is a bustling location for the summer and with that, we are learning quickly that road closures due to events in the Seaport are occurring as arbitrarily as a winning starting pitcher for a certain team (yes, I said it).

With that, we encourage you for the next 3 weeks or so to use Dry Dock Ave to Black Falcon to avoid one of these arbitrary-don't-care-if-businesses-are-impacted-one-bit closures.

On the other hand, if you are interested in attending one of the many events in the Seaport area, and want to use our much beloved evening care service from 6 pm to 11 pm, remember you can park your car at Fenway Bark and walk to your event.  Our evening care is $24 and last time I checked parking in the Seaport, it was $25 for the evening.  Use that extra dollar to buy your pup a duck foot one of our other treats!

No Hot Dogs at Fenway Bark!

It might have been steamy outside last week but inside Fenway Bark the pup were all nice and cool.  Just like their human families, dogs like to enjoy a frozen treat once in a while.  On the hottest days of last week, many of our climate controlled canines enjoyed Yoghunds in the privacy of their own rooms.  Yoghunds, frozen peanut butter kongs, frozen yogurt kongs, and raw marrow bones are always available for purchase for your pup while in our care.

Summer Romances at Fenway Bark

Marvin didn't know when he flew across the country from Seattle to live in Boston that at his first stop, Fenway Bark, he would fall in love.  Marvin loves Lily.  He really, really loves Lily.  When he sees Lily, no other dogs matter to him.  Perhaps it is the way she says "Arf" without the "r" or that she likes a baseball team with a DH, whatever the reason, he is in love.  And doesn't everyone like a good puppy love story to start their week?

Fenway Bark Calendar of Events

June 23 and 30 - K9 Klatch - 12 - 1 pm
June 23 and 30 - Puppy Kindergarten and Basic Obedience classes, 10 am and 11 am
June 21 and 28 - Puppy Kindergarten and Basic Obedience classes, 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm
July 24 - 6 pm - When Your Dog is Sick in Middle of Night:  Homeopathy for First Aid - Loretta Butehorn

Traffic Patterns June 29 - July 9

Fenway Bark is in the heart of the Tall Ships celebration June 29 - July 9.  During this time Cruise ships, Cirque de Soleil, Bank of America Pavilion, and the Tall Ships will all be generating a lot of traffic in the area and Seaport Blvd will have limited access the entire week and will close completely on the 4th of July.

To that end, we strongly encourage you to use Dry Dock Ave to Black Falcon the entire window of the Tall Ships celebration.  We also encourage you to plan additional time to get to and from Fenway Bark.  We will do our best to alert you to special circumstances that may effect your commute.

Parking at Fenway Bark will be limited to only employees and guests using our services.  We can not accommodate parking for guests who use our services at other times of the year but want to be in the heart of all the festivities.

Yoghund for your pup?

Is your dog participating in daycare or boarding during the heat wave?  Order up a Yoghund for your pooch on a hot day to make your dog more comfortable.  Just ask the concierge or click on the link to send an email to the concierge to order a round for your pup!

Say No to "Hot" Dogs!

The next three days may be a heat wave for the New England record books and with that comes the responsibility of keeping your pet safe from the heat. Not taking the right precautions can endanger your pet.

1)  Always keep abundant fresh water available for your pets.
2)  Do not keep your dog in a parked vehicle where the heat can climb quickly and potentially kill your pet due to organ damage.
3)  If your dog has a thick coat of fur, consider a summer cut.  We have capacity on Wednesday for a few more dogs for summer cuts.  Call the concierge at 617-464-4364 to make an appointment.
4)  Do not expose your dog to asphalt any longer than absolutely necessary.  Asphalt retains heat and remember, your pets are a lot closer to the ground than you.
5)  If you use a pet walking service, give instructions about what you expect in terms of adjustments to exposure to asphalt and the elements.
6)  If you own a business with foot traffic, put out some water for our four legged friends.

Fenway Bark's ocean front location keeps your dog nice and cool with ocean breezes and low exposure to asphalt.

Does your dog like to jump in the water?  Our bone shaped pool is available for all the dogs on our large lawn.

Stay safe!  For more tips, see MyDogIsCool.com.

Summer Traffic Patterns for Fenway Bark

Driving Suggestions:

With Cirque du Soleil at the Marine Industrial Park until mid July, Harborfest coming in July, and cruise ships arriving over the next 5 months, please make note of suggested driving directions on our white board based on events in the area.

In general, you may want to avoid Northern Blvd between now and mid July, especially in the evenings, while Harborfest and Cirque du Soleil is in town.  Taking Dry Dock Ave to Black Falcon Ave will be more efficient in the evening during this time.

During Harborfest the City of Boston will be closing parts of Northern Blvd down to the public for an entire week.  It will be necessary to arrive via Dry Dock Ave during Harborfest.  Please make note.

All that said, Fenway Bark is in the heart of all the action, including the Bicentennial of the War of 1812, the Blue Angels, the turning of all Ironsides outside our windows, the Tall Ships and more!  If you are going to be enjoying Harborfest, you can leave your dog with us for daycare and walk right into the days activities from our front door.  Park your car for free at Fenway Bark if you have a 60 day daycare package in place.

Chicken Jerky - Use Caution

There is an ongoing public concern about pet consumption of chicken jerky.  Further suspect is with chicken jerky imported from China that may have undergone irradiation to increase shelf life.

The internet is rife with bad information, misconstrued calls to action, Facebook pages dedicated to demonizing brands, etc.  Please find a recently published Q & A issued by the FDA that addresses this on-going concern.

Fenway Bark believes in providing you with sound information to allow you to make the best decision possible for your pet.

We continue to ask questions of our suppliers about the source of their proteins to minimize potential exposure to known contaminants, including melamine and salmonella.   An American flag on the packaging or words implying American in the brand name does not equal assurance of the source of the protein or manufacturing location.

Whether you buy from us or other retailers, be an informed consumer to provide your pet with the best possible nutrition.  Sometimes a bargain price isn't a bargain when long term health is compromised.

PS - And while I am comfortably nestled on my soap box, the same is true for services such as boarding, daycare, training and grooming.  In this capacity, you truly have to ask questions to find out what your dollar buys you and ensure accountability by your service provider.  Not doing your homework can be costly, both financially and emotionally.  Excellent care, whether for a human relative or your pet, rarely comes with a flashing blue light special or bargain basement pricing.
